Thailand: Worth the Money vs. Waste of Money

After four trips, I know exactly where the baht goes far and where it disappears. Here's the honest split.

WORTH EVERY BAHT

1. Private boat tour in Phuket

Racha Yai, James Bond Island, Banana Beach, Koh Bon — all in one day with your own captain. The flexibility to stay longer at spots you love and skip the overcrowded ones makes this infinitely better than a group tour. Split between friends and it's surprisingly reasonable.

2. Ethical elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai

Feeding and bathing elephants without riding or exploitation. The baby elephant that took a banana from my hand is the single best money I've ever spent on a travel experience.

3. Art of Living Airbnb in Krabi

A luxury stay with pool, jungle views, and the kind of quiet that makes you forget time zones exist. Airbnbs in Thailand offer insane value compared to what you'd pay in India for the same quality.

4. Phutawan Luxury Resort, Railey

Splurge accommodation that's worth the splurge. Beachfront, beautiful rooms, and sunsets that belong in a painting. If you're going to spend big on one stay in Thailand, make it Railey.

5. Scooty rental in Phuket

Freedom to explore Old Town, hidden cafes, viewpoints, and beaches at your own pace. Costs almost nothing and changes the entire trip. My number one Phuket hack.

6. Chatuchak Market in Bangkok

Massive, chaotic, and full of things you didn't know you needed. Set a budget, stick to it (you won't), and block out at least three hours.

7. Michelin Gourmand restaurants in Phuket

Thailand-quality food at a fraction of what you'd pay for Michelin recognition anywhere else. The crab curry still haunts me.

8. Thipsamai Pad Thai in Bangkok

The orange blossom egg-wrapped Pad Thai is genuinely the best I've ever had. Go off-peak to avoid the brutal queue.

9. Swimming with sharks and turtles in Koh Tao

Terrifying for the first three minutes. Transformative for the rest. The underwater clarity in Koh Tao is unreal.

WASTE OF MONEY

1. Jay Fai in Bangkok

There. I said it. A Michelin-starred street food stall where the crab omelette is good but not 'two-hour queue and 10x street food prices' good. The emperor has no clothes and somebody needed to say it.

2. Floating Market near Bangkok

Manufactured tourist experience. Inflated prices. Packed boats. The market at Ong Ang Walking Street is the real deal and it's free to wander.

3. Maeklong Railway Market

A train passes through a market. It takes 30 seconds. Getting there takes two hours. The math doesn't work.

4. Monkey Trail in Krabi

Hot, humid, aggressive monkeys who want your stuff. The views aren't good enough to justify the sweating and the theft risk. Hard pass.

5. Auntie Nid Coffee Shop in Bangkok

Cute concept but the drinks were cloyingly sweet. Go for the aesthetic if you must, skip if you actually want good coffee.
