The Islands: Full Moon Parties, Shark Swims, and a Workation in Paradise

Koh Phangan · Koh Tao — the island chapter where I partied until sunrise and swam with sharks in the same week.

KOH PHANGAN — CHAOS, BEAUTIFUL CHAOS

The Full Moon Party is... an experience. There's no other way to describe it. Neon paint on your body, buckets of dubious cocktails, fire dancers, bass so heavy you feel it in your chest, thousands of people on Haad Rin beach losing their minds. It's not refined. It's not luxury. It's pure, unfiltered, beautiful chaos.

What surprised me was the Jungle Party. Less famous than the Full Moon but honestly? Better. Set deep in the jungle with a sound system that reverberates through the trees, fairy lights strung between ancient trunks, and a crowd that's more about the music than the spectacle. The Jungle Party felt like a secret. The Full Moon Party felt like a headline.

I did both in the same trip and they're such different energies that they don't compete — they complement each other. Do the Full Moon for the spectacle, do the Jungle Party for the soul.

KOH TAO — WHERE I SWAM WITH SHARKS AND TURTLES

Swimming with sharks and turtles in Koh Tao is something I never imagined I'd do. The blacktip reef sharks are not dangerous (I was told this approximately forty times before I got in the water and I still wasn't fully convinced). But once you're in — watching a shark glide past you in crystal clear water, seeing a sea turtle munching on coral, feeling the quiet of the underwater world — it's transformative. I was terrified for the first three minutes and completely at peace for the next thirty.

After the adrenaline of shark swimming, Koh Tao gave me something equally valuable: a relaxed workation at the beach. I found a beachside cafe with decent WiFi, set up my laptop, and worked with my toes in the sand and a coconut within arm's reach. Is it the most productive setup? No. Is it the most peaceful? Absolutely. Koh Tao proved to me that the 'work from anywhere' dream isn't just a LinkedIn humble-brag — it's actually achievable if you pick the right island.

Island Tip: Koh Phangan for parties, Koh Tao for diving/snorkelling and chill vibes. They're a quick boat ride apart so you can easily do both. Book Full Moon Party accommodation MONTHS in advance — prices triple the week of.

The islands taught me that you can be the girl at the Full Moon Party at midnight and the girl swimming with sharks at sunrise. You don't have to pick a lane.
